One thing he did recently, that I want to do someday, is travel the ancient silk road in the "-stans", Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. It is the ancient pathway from the China of Marco Polo to Europe (via Constantinople and Venice). Here are some amazing pictures. Because the area isn't thought to be too safe, it was pretty empty.
